Endangered Whales: Migration Patterns Possibly Changing?
A recent newspaper article in the SPOKESMAN REVIEW, noted that a lone female humpback whale has confounded scientists by traveling a route completely opposite to the normal migration patterns of the species:
“While humpbacks normally migrate along a north-to-south axis to feed and mate, this one – affectionately called AHWC No. 1363 – made the unusual decision to check out a new continent thousands of miles to the east.
Marine ecologist Peter Stevick says it probably wasn’t love that motivated her – whales meet their partners at breeding sites, so it’s unlikely that this one was following a potential mate.
“It may be that this is an extreme example of exploration,” he said. “Or it could be that the animal got very lost.”
Stevick laid out the details of the whale’s trip on Wednesday in the Royal Society’s Biology Letters, calculating that, at a minimum, the whale must have traveled about 6,200 miles to get from Brazil to Madagascar, off the coast of east Africa.
“No other mammal has been seen to move between two places that are further apart,” said Stevick, who works at the Maine-based College of the Atlantic.
Moreover, swapping a breeding ground in Brazil for one in Madagascar was previously unheard of.”
There are several opinions regarding this “irrational whale behavior”, but none fit. One is that she is “lost”, another that the whale has a defective sonar and memory pattern and another was “extreme exploration”. But if you look at all the research that has gone thus far into whales, their social behavior, training of their young their navigational prowess and the fact that scientists regard whales first in intelligence below man, none of the above reasons fit.
I suggest to you another reason. We know by scientific measurement that the oceans are changing and that food sources today (as compared to 100 years ago) are diminishing due to over fishing and pollution. Whales can also see that their species is dwindling and endangered. For example, it is estimated that (from my earlier blog) that the sperm whale was over a million prior to the 1800’s. Now a little over 100,000 exist. Where there was once 275,000 humpbacks, now only 10,000 exist.
I propose to you that whales are also smart enough to know they are being hunted; they have no defense against ships of steel and diesel engines. As whales are air breathers and mammals, they must surface to breathe. It is at that point whales are killed by harpoon guns. Add to the fact that man has now created ships that can not only move faster than a whale can swim, and harpoon a whale while simultaneously drag the whale into its metal bowels.
Enter Japan.
This is the sad side of technology, when man is actually smart enough and advanced enough to change this dismal picture.
I suggest to you an idea, if you believe whales are not fish, but are intelligent creatures. Let’s forward the idea that any creature can tell that its food staple is diminishing. And that where it goes to mate, spawn and feed is the area it is being most hunted. Would it not be possible that because it sees a potential end of its own species, it might send one of its own kind to find new feeding grounds and safer havens?
If the key to any creature’s (including man) existence is survival, wouldn’t you change your habits if your food and your species is diminishing?

Having one of my degrees in science, my experience is that most researcher/scientists are a bit linear in the way they think. It does not mean that they cannot think outside the box, only that sometimes they have to step back and connect the dots.
There is a recent article about how the gray whale survived the ice age. What has been discovered is that they did so by changing their migration patterns, looking for food. But those scientists who discovered this are not necessarily the same ones trying to figure out why the humpback went to Madagascar. You also have the problem that some scientist also only study one species of whale. So they don’t always ‘share notes’.
I am hoping scientists share notes more often for the whales’ sake!

lol a couple of the reviews bloggers write are really silly and unrelated, there are times i question myself whether they actually read the posts before writing or whether they merely look at the subject of the blog post and write the very first idea that drifts into their minds.
