What do you think is in a whale’s song?
Scientists for many, many years have wondered about the question about whales songs. Behaviorists feel that whale songs are learned whale behavior and nothing else. Yet in recent years, marine researchers have recognized and tracked specific whales, noting that each year, whale songs do change over time. A whale’s basic song stays the same, but there are noticeable changes in the pitch sound and melody in the whale’s song.
I have had several profound encounters with whales. Prior to having actual contact with them, I was always fascinated with their songs. It was if there was a communication being spoken, but what was it?
It’s funny, you know. We have Hollywood movies built around creating languages. Special linguists develop alien languages and these language specialists are paid huge amounts of money to create new languages which seem to communicate (these fake languages are even subtitled in English!). And yet in hearing a REAL new language on this planet, one that has been around for thousands of years, we can’t always decipher what is being said. Why is that?
How many years did it take us to decipher the Babylonian language, much less Egyptian? It was only with the discovery of the Rosetta Stone that man was then able to discover his roots.
It is a different story with whales. Living in an aquatic environ and having only flippers for swimming, it was never a natural thing to sit down and write. But communication, nevertheless, took place with the creation of sound. Scientists, on the other hand, just haven’t figured it out.
Instead, scientists study a whale’s habits, breeding cycles and routes whales travel. One could say whales are the oldest seafarers in the world. Whales use no stars, but traverse the globe without ever getting lost. And whales’ brains are even larger than ours!
Scientists have even become to realize that the whales they are studying have become endangered whales!
So imagine my amazement when one day I found myself communicating with a whale! Some may call it telepathy. My best explanation is I was born with a ‘gift’ or an ability. The ability is like a radio tuner. One just needs to carefully ‘twist the dial’ to suddenly hear the whale voices. In my case it is a ‘broadband’ – I hear many kinds of creatures!
I believe this ability or ‘gift’ is something we all have natively. All of us have just forgotten that ability is there. And yet we do use this ability to communicate between ourselves and even our small animal pets we keep around us throughout our lives!
“Well, if you can talk to them, what do whales talk about?” is a comment often asked me by the skeptic.
Silly as it sounds, whales don’t have idle chatter like we do. Not about boyfriends, girlfriends, high-powered cars, expensive cars or the stock market.
Whales spend their time teaching their young feeding habits, travel routes, and mating habits. They sing their songs as a means to mark their paths, just like Homer wrote his Odyssey.
“Impossible!” you might say.
Well, I guess I am living an impossible life!
Just now man is willing to talk about ‘Dog Whisperers’ or even “Elephant Whisperers’. Many of us even talk to our pets and believe that we have heard them and they us. So what is the difference with whales?

Hi Yvonne, thank you so much for your comments. Yes, spam is an issue. I get between 4-500 responses per day and havereduced it by hand with only comments with a real name attached. I also try to watch out for anything that is obscene in the email address. I will check out the program that can cut out those without verifiable e-mail addresses.
Yes, cetaceans and I are friends in the most literal sense, believe it or not. This entire adventure is done out of pure care and concern for their well-being; the book and e-book profits go to non-profit animal conservation/protection groups.
